With targeted learning and networking with industry leaders, Green Day provides a unique opportunity to connect with the companies and individuals who are writing the new rules of hospitality: green building standards, energy-efficient best practices, transparent and authentic marketing, and awe-inspiring design.

This year join WATG and IDEO, as they present their winning concept for the first-ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition, presented by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and NEWH—the Hospitality Industry Network. Selected by a jury of industry experts from 65 entries, their suite, Haptik, a Greek term meaning to experience interactions based on sense of touch, created juxtaposition between sustainability and luxury by redefining the guest experience without sacrificing either ideal.

During the luncheon, winners of the 3rd annual HD/ASID sponsored Earth-Minded Award (EMA) recognizing the creative accomplishments of green project and product design in hospitality will also be announced, and NEWH will present its annual sustainable design scholarship with a matching grant to the student and his or her university.

Keynote: Jason F. McLennan, CEO, Cascadia Green Building Council

Jason McLennan serves as the CEO of the Cascadia Green Building Council, the Pacific Northwest’s leading organization in the field of green building and sustainable development. Cascadia is a chapter of both the US Green Building Council and the Canadian Green Building Council. He is the author of the Living Building Challenge an international green building program and co-creator of Pharos, the most advanced building material rating system in North America.

Jason is known as an international thought leader in the green architecture movement and has lectured on sustainability across the US and Canada. His work in the sustainable design field has been published or reviewed in dozens of journals, magazines conference proceedings and books including Architecture, Architectural Record, Dwell, Plenty, Metropolis, NY Times, The Globe and Mail, The World and I, Ecostructure and Environmental Design and Construction Magazine. He is the author of four books; The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, The Dumb Architect’s Guide to Glazing Selection, the Ecological Engineer and Zugenruhe. The Philosophy of Sustainable Design is currently used as a textbook in over 60 universities and colleges and is distributed widely throughout Europe and North America.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and NEWH presents the winner of the first-ever Sustainable Suite Design Competition. Join the winning design team from WATG and IDEO as they present their suite, Haptik, a Greek term meaning to experience interactions based on sense of touch, created a juxtaposition between sustainability and luxury by redefining the guest experience without sacrificing either ideal. Recent Iron Chef winner Kent Rathbun of Dallas is a long-term client of EDG and Jennifer Johanson. Over the past 10 years, they have created a range of successful venues: a high-end Dallas spot called Abacus; a more casual, multi-unit Texas concept called Jasper's; and, now, an informal Dallas restaurant called Kent Rathbun's Blue Plate Kitchen. EDG and Rathbun performed a "surgical" renovation on an existing restaurant that they found to be over-designed. Their goal was to create a welcoming, family-style, neighborhood atmosphere that would encourage frequent visits. In this depressed economy, Blue Plate is a happy success story, illustrating how to give clients and customers what they want, without breaking the bank. Johanson will share the deconstruction process, and how and why simple materials and communal layouts work now. From a design perspective, she will show how to energize and reactivate an underperforming restaurant space.(+/-)
